Following in the footsteps of Cameron Jerome, Robbie Fowler, Francis Jeffers and Andy Gray, Gary McSheffrey is the newest goalscorer to be touted for a move to Norfolk.
Twenty-three year-old McSheffrey, who began his career at Highfield Road and has scored more than 50 goals for the club who now call the Ricoh Arena home, is rumoured by the Sunday People to have been lined up by Nigel Worthington as a potential replacement for Dean Ashton.
It is equally likely that Worthington, who has been without Leon McKenzie for most of the season so far, is looking for attackers to bolster the squad regardless of whether Ashton stays or goes. McSheffrey, who can include the opener against the Canaries in a 2-2 draw at the Ricoh among his ten goals this term, has been a consistent performer in a struggling Coventry side.
McSheffrey's former team-mate Calum Davenport, now of Tottenham Hotspur, is also in the sights of Worthington should he have the funds for a move. Davenport impressed in a loan spell at Norwich, where he made 16 appearances and scored once. Both the club and the player were keen to make the switch permanent, with Spurs boss Martin Jol showing no signs of handing Davenport a chance at White Hart Lane.
Neither Davenport or McSheffrey would come cheap, and the moves would most likely only come in the event of Ashton's departure. Today's Sunday Mirror has Portsmouth, who were said this week to have baulked at the £7million asking price before buying two more strikers, swooping for the 22 year-old.
