Paul Lambert is preparing a bid for Millwall defender Zak Whitbread, according to reports.
Whitbread, 25, who began his career at Liverpool, will be out of contract in the summer and looks set to move on in January. He was close to a move to Championship club Peterborough in the summer but the deal collapsed over personal terms.
Lambert has currently only Gary Doherty and Michael Nelson available at the back because of injuries to Danish revelation Jens Berthel Askou and Michael Spillane. New signing Russell Martin can play in the middle but has been signed mainly as a right back.
Whitbread is qualified to play for the USA and could be attracted to a higher profile club like Norwich in a bid to gain a place in his country's World Cup squad.
