Clemence is definitely someone whose opinion should be respected greatly. He is currently England's senior goalkeeping coach and had a glittering career winning just about everything possible in the English game.
There is no doubt that Clemence is correct when saying Green is having an excellent season. He has put in some fantastic performances for the Canaries, winning them several points on the way. Remember that 0-0 at Preston? Green made 3 or 4 superb saves to save a point for Norwich. Looking at West Brom's 3-0 defeat at Preston last week that could prove to be a very valuable point.
Speaking at the Euro 2004 launch at the Portuguese Embassy, Clemence said: "Robert is having an exceptional season. The two or three times I have seen him he has played very well and has made vital saves which have influenced games.
"He is one of the main reasons why Norwich are in the position they are at the moment. He is still young and has been involved with England earlier in his career and he is one we have kept an eye on throughout."
Clemence refused to state whereabouts Green is in the pecking order when it comes to the England Number 1 jersey.
"I do not want to put a number on and do not want to put pressure on him."
But he added: "If he continues to do what he is doing it can only help him in the future. If he plays Premiership football he will be playing against the best in the land and you are pushed to your limits and that can only improve you."
To get praise from an England legend such as Clemence will be a great confidence boost to Green. He now knows that he is in the thoughts of the England set up and if he continues to perform to a high standard (preferably in the Premiership with Norwich) then an England call is inevitable.
The other contenders for the England Number One position:
David James: The current holder of the jersey. He is a good shop stopper but never looks convincing when claiming crosses. Plus he is 33.
Nigel Martyn: In superb form for Everton but again his age of 37 might put Sven off.
Paul Robinson: In my opinion overrated. He has made some excellent saves for Leeds but a has had a few dodgy moments along the way.
Ian Walker: Did you watch the Leicester Bolton game? Green is definitely ahead of Mike's son Ian.
Chris Kirkland: If he was fit and playing for Liverpool he would probably be the Number 1 by now. However he is always always injured.
So on this evidence it looks like Green might be a bit busier than he imagined this summer!
