Norwich City's trolley dash around the January sales with the money from the sale of Dean Ashton could begin at Colchester United's Layer Road.
U's star Greg Halford has scored eight times this season from a variety of positions to power the unfashionable club to the top of League One. The 21-year-old has reportedly been a target for the likes of Manchester United and is rated in the £1million bracket. Nigel Worthington fancies making him a Canary.
“We do like the player,” said Worthington. “And, yes, we have made an inquiry and that's as far as it has gone.”
Halford would represent a valuable acquisition as he combines stature, 6'4" of it, with versatility. The England youth player has been employed all down the right hand side, as a midfielder and as a striker by boss Phil Parkinson. He also scored a memorable strike for Peter Taylor's England under-20 side in last summer's Toulon tournament.
The Colchester man is the second player Worthington has admitted his interest in, after Cardiff hitman Cameron Jerome, whose potential arrival could compensate fans for the loss of the popular Dean Ashton. It is not yet known how much of the £7million West Ham paid for City's top scorer will be made available for incoming transfers.
