Cambridge Fans United would like to say a big thank you to all football fans that either attended or sent messages of support to Cambridge United for their ''Fans United'' day against Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday March 19th.
Fans from clubs as geographically diverse as Alloa Athletic to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, as financially diverse as Chelsea to Wrexham gave their support. It was heartwarming to see the attendance from pretty much all of the 91 clubs that currently reside in a higher league position than the U''s as well as non league, national team and foreign league support.
Cambridge United are one of many professional football clubs that face a bleak future. After years of perpetually poor management decisions at board level, Cambridge United has found itself fighting for survival both financially and on the field of play. In November 2004, the board of directors sold off the clubs only asset, the Abbey Stadium for £1.9m in a sale and lease back deal to a property development company. The entire proceeds of this sale have been squandered and the club finds itself in need of a serious restructure and also an injection of cash if it is to survive to play another season and prevent eviction from its home ground.
The fans of the club, through their Supporters Trust, CFU are looking to takeover the club and run it at breakeven to secure the clubs future for the fans. They have formulated plans to take over the executive mantle and ''cut the clubs cloth accordingly'' going forward and have also a plan in place to reacquire the Abbey Stadium and convert it into a Community hub, providing services to the local economy 7 days a week, not just for football.
Everyone who attended the Fans United day has already added support to this cause, those who could not attend, but wish to support can do so in many ways.
Send a supportive text message prefixed ''CFU'' to our support number 84122 (i.e. CFU All the best to the U''s from...) Texts cost £1 plus your normal text message cost. Approximately 50p of the total is donated directly to CFU.
