A marvellous individual goal from Norwich striker Darren Huckerby saved the Canaries' unbeaten away record on a rare visit to the West Country.
Huckerby struck three minutes after the interval to cancel out an own goal by team-mate Simon Charlton that had given the home side the lead and was threatening to hand Norwich a first away defeat in four matches.
Argyle took the lead after debut boy Lilian Nalis' pass had allowed Northern Ireland international Tony Capaldi to cross to David Norris at the far post, where the ball was cleared for a corner by Adam Drury.
Pilgrims striker Nick Chadwick got something on Capaldi's flag-kick at the near post and veteran Charlton's swing at the ball sent it past goalkeeper Robert Green and over the line before Jurgen Colin hacked it away.
Charlton made immediate amends, clearing Norris' left-footed shot off the line with his thigh.
Argyle's impressive start to the second half, when they forced two quick corners, was undone as Huckerby profited from a breakaway, beating Anthony Barness twice before chipping the ball over Argyle's French goalkeeper Romain Larrieu from the tightest of angles.
Norwich midfielder Jason Jarrett's quick return to Home Park, after lining up for Argyle in their previous league game at the end of a successful seven-game loan spell for the Pilgrims, ended in misery as he limped off injured.
Green had to dive full stretch to keep out another shot from the impressive Micky Evans after Chadwick had chested down Capaldi's delivery into his path, before Chadwick fired the Pilgrims' best second-half opportunity over the crossbar.
Worringly for Norwich, striker Dean Ashton, who was just back from a groin injury, was taken off with ten minutes to go after overstretching.
Peter Thorne, his replacement, had a good chance to score with his first touch, but Larrieu dropped on his soft goalbound effort.
